Barbara Walker graduated in 1979 with a BS in Elementary Education with a Deaf Specialization. She then continued her education and received an Early Childhood endorsement. She worked as an itinerant teacher for the hearing impaired for Omaha Public Schools for two years, then started her career at the Omaha Hearing School in the Fall of 1981. She has remained a teacher there and is currently working with hearing impaired infants and their families/caregivers. She is currently Education Coordinator for the school as well.
“I became involved with Hands and Voices just a little over a year ago. It was the Mission Statement that drew me to the organization.( ‘…dedicated to supporting families with children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing without a bias around communication modes or methodology.’) At the Omaha Hearing School we have been constantly trying to keep auditory-oral education one of the options that parents can consider as they investigate the communication possibilities for their hearing impaired child. Joining these people to help support families just seemed a good fit for me. I have found it informative, enlightening and enjoyable.
