My husband, Marty, and I have been married for almost 23 years . We have two children: Thomas – 18 and Amanda – 14, our dog, Mr. Ubu Too, and we live in Bellevue, Nebraska. Thomas is profoundly deaf, and uses a cochlear implant and a hearing aid with total communication. He is currently attending Ralston High School and plans on attending college following graduation in 2012. I have worked full-time as a legal secretary for 25 years. Along with my involvement with Hands & Voices, I am also on the Family Support Work Group with the Nebraska Early Hearing Detection Intervention program, and coordinate the Nebraska Deaf Gymnastics Special Olympics team.
I got involved with Hands & Voices because I wanted to share my experiences. Over the years, I received great support and lots of advice other “veteran parents” and felt that now that I am one of those “veterans” it was my time to give back. I also felt that even though I had a lot of support from professionals and parents, there were still things that I missed – information and organizations that I wish I had known about earlier on in our journey. I truly believe that parents are our best resource. Hands & Voices brings all these resources together.
