Join the Hands & Voices Family Leadership in Language and Learning (FL3) Center for the next presentation in our Leadership Webinar series. As leaders, we spend a lot of time and energy inviting others to join us at “the table” through recruiting and hiring new staff, bringing in new nonprofit board members, and/or finding new committee members to contribute to our systems work. However, without putting intentional thought into what we will do with these new individuals and “setting the table”, we could lose them before they become actively involved and engaged. Strategically designing and implementing orientation and onboarding processes can impact the longevity, enthusiasm, and sustainability of new leaders in an organization. Effective orientation encourages confidence and contributes to more productive involvement by providing key tools and organizational culture right from the start. Onboarding enhances this process providing more individualized, ongoing support setting he/she/they up for success. This session will explore strategies and tips to help ensure that all the hard work put into finding the “right” individual pays off, and those who are coming into the fold are equipped to harness the enthusiasm that brought them to the organization in the first place!

Family leaders, family-based support organizations, Deaf-based organizations. EHDI program staff, EHDI systems stakeholders, and Pediatric Healthcare Professionals are also welcome.

Presenters

Janet DesGeorges, Hands & Voices Headquarters

Janet lives in Boulder, Colorado with her husband Joe and is mom to three daughters, including Sara, who is deaf/hard of hearing. She is a co-founder and Executive Director of Hands & Voices Headquarters, a parent support and advocacy organization for families who have children who are hard of hearing/deaf. Janet has presented to groups worldwide about the experiences of families as they journey through life with a child with deafness or hearing loss. Ms. DesGeorges is the author on the chapter for Family Support in the NCHAM e-Book, the co-author of the book Educational Advocacy for Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing: The Hands & Voices Guidebook, and many other publications. Ms. DesGeorges received a program certificate from the MCH Public Health Leadership Institute in 2011 at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. As an advocate, Janet believes in the principles and guiding philosophies of Hands & Voices towards a parent-driven, professionally collaborative approach when supporting families and working towards systemic improvements.

Terri Patterson, Hands & Voices Headquarters

Terri is the mom of two, now-grown children, including a son who is deaf, as well as being hard of hearing herself. Residing in Atlanta, Georgia, she is the Director of Chapter Support for Hands & Voices Headquarters and is on the core management team for the Family Leadership in Language and Learning (FL3) Center, a HRSA funded co-operative agreement, providing peer to peer leadership training and technical support to family leaders and Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programs. Ms. Patterson is the founder of Georgia Hands & Voices (GA H&V) and acted as Executive Director and GA H&V Guide By Your Side Coordinator; her 17 years of experience working with EHDI systems, in Georgia and nationally, partnered with her passion around leadership development is demonstrated through one-on-one training; state, national and international presentations; and national committee facilitation such as her past position as Co-Chair for the EHDI Parent to Parent Committee. Her B.A. in Social Sciences supports her ability to manage time effectively and absorb information, understand it, and provides the versatility needed in engaging with diverse individuals and groups. As the coordinator and co-developer of the Hands & Voices Leadership-to-Leadership (L2L) Development Program Ms. Patterson is deeply passionate about a leader’s need to invest in one’s own personal leadership development to support and participate in systemic improvement.
