Drew Watson
December 2024
Congratulations to Drew Watson, our December 2024 Rising Star!
Drew was nominated by Lisa Richardson who had the following to say:
"I am nominating Drew Watson for the Rising Star Award. He has been a student of mine since the fifth grade. Currently, Drew is a Senior at Fairbury High School. During our therapy sessions, Drew has always had a positive outlook on the management of his hearing difference and uses his accommodations to his fullest to be a successful student and athlete. I think Drew tells it best about his journey. He wrote this for me last spring 2024 as a reflection of his years growing up with a hearing difference. Drew has given me permission to share it with others. “In situations where others might get away with not coming forward, I value always being honest and doing the right thing. During group activities I always make sure that I do my share and it's important I work with my peers and listen to their decisions. I pay attention to not only people's words but their body language and facial expressions, tone of voice. I always check back to make sure that I am understanding. I do this because I am respectful of other people’s ideas, but also I have been taught from a young age on the best way to get information from my world. Why is it important for me to use my whole surroundings to keep me informed? The body language, facial expressions and tone of voice help me to hear others better. I have a hearing loss. Actually, I like to call it a hearing difference. I don’t feel lost because my hearing is different from others. I’ve accommodated myself well to get me as far as I am today. My hearing difference does not define me, but it does make me more aware of how and where I listen best” (Drew Watson, April 2024). It is my honor to nominate Drew Watson for the Guide By Your Side Rising Star Award. He has shown others how to shine bright no matter what."
